Birding in Pucusana Area and Villa Wetlands

Pucusana Area.
Day 1: Early departure from Hotel to Pucusana Area, located 40 miles south of Lima.

This small and charming fishing town is located 60 km south of Lima and is very popular among “Limeños” looking for seafood and sun during the summer season. Pucusana is situated inside a small cove and protected by an island just in front of it. Boat trips can be arranged from the main dock to visit the near beaches and tour around the island. A visit to its booming fish market is also customary.

Pucusana´s fauna is that of the typical species that are closely associated to the cold seawaters of the Humboldt Current. Sea lions can be seen laying on the rocky side of the island together with a wide arrange of sea birds. Inca Tern, Peruvian Booby, Belcher’s Gull, Peruvian Pelican and Guanay and Red-legged Cormorants are common here. A colony of Humboldt Penguins also lives in a cave on the island and they can be easily observed during a boat trip. In addition, the endemic Surf Cinclodes can be seen wandering in the coastal tides on the beaches.

Depending on time, we will visit some coastal scrub surrounded by agricultural fields. Here we will find a different array of birds, which are typical of desert and coastal scrub: Croaking Ground-dove, Burrowing Owl, Amazilia Hummingbird, Peruvian Sheartail, Long-tailed Mockingbird, Scrub Blackbird, Groove-Billed Ani, Short-tailed Field Tyrant, Southern Beardless Tyrannulet, American Kestrel, among others are easily seen.

LUNCH: Local Restaurant in Pucusana or near Lima.

Villa Wetlands

Villa Wetlands is the only protected area within the city limits of Lima, and because of this it has a very important scientific and educational value. Villa was also declared a RAMSAR site in 1997 (International Convention of Wetlands). This complex of lagoons, pools and marsh areas made up of totora reed clumps, are part of a migratory corridor and resting point for several bird species along the Peruvian coast. More than 130 bird species have been recorded here, and at least 20 to 30 species can be seen on a single visit. Villa wetland is an obligatory stopping-point for birdwatchers and ornithologists.

Among birds, Villa is a good spot to observe: Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, Wren-like Rushbird, Peruvian Thick-knee, Pied-billed Grebe, Great Grebe, Plumbeous Rail, Black-necked Stilt, Peruvian Meadowlark, Least Bittern, White-Cheeked Pintail, Osprey, Gray Gull, Grey-hooded Gull among others waterfowl and sea birds.
