Birding in Paracas
Visit to Paracas National Reserve
 
Paracas National Reserve is known as one of the most biologically productive marine areas in the world, serving as a breeding ground for fishes, marine mammals and birds. Paracas is home of many endangered and threatened species like the South American fur seal, southern sea lion and green and leatherback sea turtles. With lucky, the elusive sea otter also can be seeing near the rockeries of the reserve; this specie is in danger of extinction.
 

Day 1

After breakfast we departure towards the reserve, located 145 miles south of Lima. The ride will take 4 hours along the coastal belt form by one of the driest deserts in the world. On the way, we will make a few stops to look for some specialties like: Wren like Rushbird, Many-colored Marsh-Tyrant and some waterfowl. After lunch, we will visit the Interpretation Center to learn about Paracas Ecosystem and biodiversity and Paracas pre-Inca culture. Before dawn we will explore the surroundings of the hotel looking for shorebirds and some waterfowl, and with luck Chilean Flamingos along the bay.

Day 2
Early morning boat exploration to Ballestas islands. The tour to Ballestas is fascinating in terms of numbers of Guano birds’ species, (Peruvian Pelican, Peruvian Booby, Guanay Cormorants as the main producers) also there’s a good chance to spot some of the pelagic bird species such as Sooty Shearwater and a few species of Petrels. Humboldt Penguin is also one of the main attractions. After lunch, we will explore the nearby beaches of the reserve (Peruvian Tern) and some of the agricultural fields to look for Peruvian Thick-knees, Short-Tailed Field Tyrant, Burrowing Owls, Amazilia Hummingbirds among others. Then we will search for the endangered Slender-billed Finch on a Prosopis forest nearby.

Day 3
As an extension trips for birding in the coast, we can choose 2 options:
Lachay National Reserve (Full day)
Pantanos de Villa Wetlands / Pucusana Area (Full day)

Price Includes: Transportation, guiding, Hotel (La hacienda / Posada Emancipador)
Not Included: Lunch, dinner and tips are not included.
