| Peru is one of the most biologically diverse countries and therefore one of the the biggest world centers for genetic resources. It is the country with the largest number of life zones in the world, home to 84 of the 108 life zones existing. It is among the first three mega diverse countries because of the surface of its rainforests (4th on a global scale) and has one of the most important natural fishing bowls on the planet.
Perú has the 5th largest number of species in the world, with approximately 25,000 species of plants (10% of the world total), 30% of which are endemic. It also has the largest number of orchids of any country in the world, with over 3,000 species. Regarding fauna, Peru is home of 462 species of mammals, 1,815 of birds (2nd on a global scale), 395 reptiles, 408 amphibians, 2,000 fish and 4,000 butterflies. |
